Is a Water Cleanse Diet Safe?

A water cleanse diet, or a water-fast, is a very extreme way to cleanse your body. Not only is there a major reduction in nutrients, it immediately begins to flood your body with stored toxins, and it is possible to become very ill. While no one has died from a water-fast, it isn’t the most effective strategy available. Mainly because it is very harsh, and a water fast cannot and should not be maintained for over three days.

Taking water only for a day isn’t bad. In fact, many people do this as a way to reset their body’s hunger impulse or prepare for a more sustainable detox diet, such as a raw food diet or a holistic cleanse. Doing so for any longer, however, is going to cause the body to experience a big shock. It can also force the body into a starvation mode, where it stores calories and fat and eats away at muscle.  If you choose this route, it must be done in a controlled environment and with medical supervision.

Is a water cleanse diet safe?  A much better way to cleanse is to use natural, whole foods, instead of fasting or starving.

Again, short fasts aren’t so bad, but if you really want to detox your body and lose weight, you need a more sustainable way to do it. By eliminating toxic foods like caffeine, dairy, and other refined or processed ingredients, and giving your body nutrient-dense things to eat, you get a much better, healthier, easy-to-maintain cleanse than you ever could expect from just taking water.  Plus, you will foster good eating habits the whole time.  When people come off of water fasts, they slowly fall into their old, bad habits!

Also, by giving your body vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins, and fiber, you keep it stocked with everything it needs to heal and repair itself, flush toxins, and get rid of waste and fecal matter. On the other hand, if you just drink water, you are depriving yourself of essential things, just as you are reducing calories and excluding harmful substances, and your body will go through much stress in the process.

Is a water cleanse diet safe? An extreme cleanse is not necessary for removing toxins and improving your health. Instead, you can use whole, natural fare to lose weight, cleanse, and gain more energy.

Eating the foods nature provides gives you all you need to flush toxins, build your immune system, and most importantly create better eating habits to keep you feeling well and energetic for life. Why put your body through the difficulties of a water fast? Instead, give your body the healing power it needs with an effective, whole foods cleanse.

I did a water diet when I was depressed and lost my appetite. I figured, let’s reap the benefits of this depression AND get healthy form the inside. The first thing I noticed was that I had lots of energy, which was surprising, and then my tongue started acting funny – getting a a white blotchy coating and painful areas until it all cleared up about 4 days later.

Thanks for sharing Christine. Amy did a water fast several years ago and she felt incredible.
