Nasal Cavity Benefits of Using a Neti Pot

Just like other parts of the body, the nasal cavities can become overburdened with debris. Inside the nose, the nasal cavity is full of small, fine hairs that are responsible for protecting your throat and lungs from germs and other irritants when you breath.

Dust and other matter settle on these hairs over time, and they can become dirty and less efficient.

Although the pollution of the sinuses has long been a concern, due to certain environmental factors our sinus cavities are more burdened than ever. That is why upper respiratory complaints and sinus illnesses are some of the most common reasons for doctor visits today. Problems such as asthma and upper respiratory infections are becoming more and more common because of herbicides, pesticides, and other air pollutants, like smog.

The abundance of pollutants and irritants in our environment makes it important for us to keep our nasal cavities clean so that they can protect us from illness. Illness is thought to enter primarily through the nose, and the fine hairs inside the nasal passages and in the throat, are our body’s primary defense against germs and toxins. That is why it is a good idea to cleanse with a neti pot.

Neti pot cleansing is a special technique that uses lukewarm water to clean off the hairs, mucus membranes, and walls of the nasal passages. It uses lightly salted water and a spouted vessel to pour water in one nostril and out the other, rinsing the inner nasal of germs and debris. It probably sounds kind of daunting, but  don’t worry, it is not difficult.

In fact, some find it soothing, and it is very easy to do. It only requires a neti pot that is right for your nose, salt, and water. The saline water enters through one nostril and out the other, carrying with it dust, dirt, pollen, and other debris. The process is repeated in both nostrils and can be completed in just three minutes, once you become experienced.

Benefits include less instances of illness, fewer asthma and allergy symptoms, and better breathing. The nostrils and inner nasal cavity function better, since they are clearer. The small hairs inside the nose, called Celia, are invigorated and can work even better than before.

Cleaning the nose with a neti pot might not sound appealing at first. It is not something that most of us would consider. Keep in mind, though, that this is an ancient Hindu practice, and it is not dangerous.

In fact, those who have tried it have found that it is refreshing and soothing. They report fewer upper respiratory infections and breathing problems, and experience better normal breathing through the nose afterward.

Although it might not seem appealing at first, using a neti pot is refreshing and easy. Even better, cleansing the nostrils with a neti pot is good for you.
